Fill the blanks Exercise

This is a self-training exercise for your users to reinforce their learning. They will have to complete the text with the missing words by selecting the correct option from a combo or by inserting text. They will test their ability to remember and understand new concepts. Once the exercise is finished, they will be able to do it again as many times as they wish.

Configuration

Depending on the size of the cell this interactive element occupies, it can behave in two ways:

  • Direct execution: When you click on the icon on the home page, the exercise starts in that same cell.

  • Launcher: If the cell containing the exercise is too small to do the exercise comfortably, this will act as a launcher. This means that after clicking the icon on the home page, the exercise will expand until it fills the whole slide. The user will be able to return the exercise to its original size by clicking on the X which appears after expanding.

In responsive mode (mobile), it always behaves in launcher mode to provide a more comfortable and immersive experience, regardless of how it behaves in its non-responsive version.

Once the exercise is done, a general feedback window will be displayed showing the number of correct answers achieved in the first attempt .

Cover

The usual customization options are available to you:

  • Color: Select one of the colors from the palette and set the opacity. In addition, you can choose any other color using the customized color configurator.
  • Gradient: Choose one of the gradients on the palette and set the opacity and the angle. In addition, you can choose any other gradient using the customized gradient configurator.
  • Image: If you decide to use an image as a background, you will have the same configuration options as you see in the image element. See the related article for further information.

Description

You can add text as a title or an introductory text that will appear on the home page of the exercise.

Text

Adding the text and the words that the student will have to complete is very easy, simply write the text directly in the text box that appears in the side editor, and using opening and closing brackets [ ] specify those words that you want the user to complete.

Response Mode

  • Combo Mode: When you choose the Combo response mode, students will be able to see all the available options in a drop-down menu for each blank space: they just need to select the right one.  This option allows them to have some hints to refresh their ideas.
  • Text Mode: When you choose the Text response mode, there won’t be any option to choose from: students will have to type in an answer. With the Text response mode students will have to make a greater effort in remembering key concepts, in other words, it is possible to increase this exercise’s level of difficulty.

You may change the Response Mode whenever you like, even after having finished setting up this exercise.

If the user gets the right answer the first time they select it, it will count as a success and the answer will blink be highlighted in green. In contrast, if the user gets it wrong, it will shake be highlighted in red and they will have the possibility of continuing to try other answers until they get the right one.

Accompanying image

You can add an accompanying image to help in resolving the exercise. It will appear next to the text so that it can be consulted while the exercise is being done.

Editing Fill the blanks exercise in Accesible mode

  • Add an alternative text and a long description if it is relevant to your cover image in the Complete exercise.
  • You can assign a title by choosing from the different headings, so that your students can identify the exercise. Try not to repeat this title in the project section.
  • Add an alternative text and a long description if it is relevant to the accompanying image of the text to be completed.

Special considerations:

For accessibility requirements, it is very important that the word-fill gaps have context before and after. That is, text that introduces the content before each filler word, and then text that semantically closes the content.
